Top High Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014

LONDON -- BAE Systems (LSE: BA  ) (NASDAQOTH: BAESY  ) andVodafone Group (LSE: VOD  ) (NASDAQ: VOD  ) operate in completely separate industries, but both companies have an attractive track record of providing high dividend yields.

The two firms also have another similarity -- both depend quite heavily on the substantial income they receive from their American businesses, without which they might struggle to fund their coveted dividend payouts.

I own both shares myself, but am looking top up some of my holdings -- so which of these two high yielders looks the best buy today?

Vodafone vs. BAE Systems
I'm going to start with a look at a few key statistics that can be used to provide a quick comparison of these two companies, based on their most recent annual results:

Vodafone BAE Systems Price to earnings ratio 14.2 11.7 Dividend yield 6.9%
(4.9% without special dividend) 5.1% 5-year average dividend growth rate 7.1% 8.8% Net gearing 32% -10% (net cash)

Vodafone plunged into a loss in the first half of this year, thanks to a hefty 5.9 billion pounds impairment on the value of its operations in Spain and Italy.

Lloyds has several catalysts working in its favor. The bank has been busily disposing of assets that it views as non-core — the latest being a $1.45 billion ($1.37 billion U.S.) disposition of Australian operations to Aussie banking giant Westpac (WBK). In addition, Lloyds said it hopes to pay out as much as 70% of earnings as a dividend by 2016, which as a high-yield editor, has my full attention. This puts shares on a prospective yield for 2016 of more than 7% if earnings come in as projected.

Best International Stocks To Buy For 2014

On Wednesday, FedEx (NYSE: FDX  ) reported adjusted EPS of $2.13, which excluded $1.18 per share of business realignment and aircraft impairment charges. This result exceeded analyst expectations by about 9%, but FedEx provided relatively downbeat earnings guidance for the upcoming fiscal year.

FedEx has been managing through a drop-off in demand for its priority delivery services, especially internationally. On the other hand, FedEx Ground is benefiting from the strong growth of e-commerce, and the company is cutting costs in the Express business to better align with demand.

FedEx's cost improvements will probably lead to robust profit growth over the next few years even if the current weak demand environment persists. Moreover, the company will be well-positioned for the next uptick in global GDP growth. Given that FedEx trades at a very reasonable valuation -- just 16 times trailing earnings -- it is likely to deliver strong returns for investors over the next several years.

Concerns about the political uncertainty in Ukraine caused some volatility in the markets Friday afternoon, with the major indexes making several U-turns ahead of the weekend. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI), which had been up by as much as 125 points, briefly dropped into loss territory before rebounding to end 49 points higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) edged up 5 points, adding to Thursday's record high, but the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) lost 10 points. AP/Darko VojinovicPro-Russian militias have seized local government buildings in Crimea, Ukraine; the unrest there is making investors around the world nervous. February was a great month for investors. All three major averages jumped by about 4 percent. UnitedHealth Group (UNH) led the blue chips, gaining 1½ percent. Other health providers – Aetna (AET), Wellpoint (WLP), Cigna (CI) and Humana (HUM) -- all gained between 1½ and 2 percent. And retail stocks remained active. Target (TGT) added another 3 percent. Best Buy rose 4 percent, and Fred's (FRED), a regional department store chain, jumped 10 percent. But Pier 1 (PIR) fell 5½ percent after lowering its earnings outlook for a second time. That led to a series of brokerage downgrades. Decker Outdoor (DECK) tumbled 12 percent. The maker of footwear brands such as Ugg and Teva issued a weak outlook. And apparel maker Lululemon (LULU) fell 5-percent on negative comments from Credit Suisse. It seems as though there are always some big movers in the drug and biotech sectors – and that was certainly the case today. GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPH) rose 2 percent after the FDA granted orphan status to its drug to treat a rare form of childhood epilepsy. But most of the action was on the downside. Endologix (ELGX) slid 24 percent after forecasting lower revenue growth. Questcor (QCOR) fell 10 percent. It's lost big for three straight days amid allegations of questionable business practices. For example, Coca-Cola (KO) will hand Monster (MNST) its energy drink brands, like NOS and Full Throttle. In exchange, the non-energy drinks that Monster produces -- Hansen's Natural Sodas, Peace Tea, Hubert's Lemonade and Hansen's Juice Products -- will become part of Coca-Cola's portfolio.

  • [By John Divine]

"Alternative beverage" and energy drinks company Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) logged some of the steepest losses in the index today, losing 3.6%. There wasn't much material news today for investors to be fearful of, but the same can't be said for the last several months. One perpetual setback for the company is the legal risk it assumes for selling and marketing its controversial energy drinks. In May, for example, the city of San Francisco sued Monster for marketing its caffeine-heavy drinks to kids without concern for potential health risks.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

By now we all know what Monster Beverage (MNST) gets from its tie-up with Coca-Cola (KO): A hefty chunk of change in exchange for nearly 17% of the company; Coca-Cola’s energy drink business swapped for its own soft-drink lines; and access to Coca-Cola’s international distributors. But what about Coca-Cola?

    Associated Press

Bernstein’s Ali Dibadj explains why Coca-Cola made the deal with Monster Beverage:

We view this development positively as it givesCoca-Cola exposure to one of the fastest growing segments of the global soft drink industryhile category growth is clearly slowing in the U.S., the potential remains very strong internationally. Specifically, we see ex-U.S. market growth of more than +12% annually for energy drinks over the next five years, about double of what we project in the U.S. For Monster Beverage, overall growth has slowed in recent years, falling below double-digits in 2013, a far cry from hyper growth in the 2005-2007 period, as market share gains have tapered off. International sales have been a small, but growing, part of the Monster story, although the international mix stagnated last year. We expect the expanded distribution agreements resulting from this partnership to jump-startMonster Beverage growth in many countries around the world. WhileMonster Beverage will still need to negotiate distribution agreements with Coca-Cola’s overseas bottlers throughout its Global System, we think the fact thatCoca-Cola no longer owns any energy drink brands will facilitate that process by removing non-compete challenges. Our country-by-country analysis suggests thatMonster Beverage could nearly double its sales with full access to the global Coca-Cola distribution system.

The partnership withMonster Beverage fits within our thesis ofCoca-Cola making a few more “big bets” in underrepresented beverage categoriest a meeting with management several months ago6, the com

Xylem Inc. (0.7%) (XYL)(XYL - $36.42 - NYSE) is a global leader in the design, manufacturing, and application of highly engineered technologies for the transportation, treatment, and testing of water. The company is expected to benefit from favorable long term fundamentals in the water industry, driven by scarcity, population growth, aging of the infrastructure, and the need to improve water quality. Further, with a large installed base of pumps and systems, the company is well positioned to increase aftermarket revenue, which currently represents roughly 40% of total revenues. Xylem's attractive business mix also generates strong cash flow, which is expected to support acquisitions, debt service, and dividend growth. Concerns regarding weakness in Europe and municipal spending levels in the U.S. remain, although we believe the long term fundamentals outweigh these concerns. Even though Merck doesn’t plan an international marriage to cut its tax bill, its shares are rallying today on solid results in the latest quarter.

Merck(MRK) stock is up 2% today afterMerck reported second-quarter earnings per share of 85 cents, better than the 81 cents analysts expected, according to Thomson I/B/E/S data.

Here are insights on the conference call that ensued, fromISI’s biotech and pharmaceutical industry analystMark Schoenbaum, paraphrased:

Merck wants “bolt-ons” acquisitions (like Idenix Pharmaceuticals (IDIX)) versus big purchases. Moreover, it is not interested in a deal primarily or solely for tax inversion purposes … [That's not ruling out the possibility of buying a foreign company to avoid U.S. taxes, but the language seems contrary to the foreign-merger possibilities for other healthcare companies, includingValeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX), Actavis (ACT), Pfizer (PFE), AbbVie (ABBV), Medtronic (MDT) and evenWalgreen (WAG).] Merck sees a “high likelihood” of success for the four-week Hepatitis C regimen from C-SWIFT when presented at a medical conference this fall. (The combo treatment includes Gilead’s Sovaldi, already on the market, and a Merck regimen.) The company sees “lots of opportunities” to possibly accelerate Food & Drug Administration filings for an experimental immuno-oncology drug for lung cancer patients. It’s excited about the expected Aug. 14 FDA decision on insomnia drug Suvorexant. (Wall Street is bearish on commercial prospects.) Merck expects U.S. volume growth for diabetes drug Januvia (which is roughly 25% of earnings) in the second half of 2014.

It found that some phones that get very high ratings from expert reviewers don't get the same glowing reviews from users. For example, expert reviewers thought the Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II was a fantastic phone. It received a rating of 88 out of 100 on FindTheBest, a website that aggregates and analyzes ratings from tech review sites. However, smartphone users gave the phone a rating of 2.5 out of 5. The reverse held true in some cases. Although expert reviewers gave the LG Optimus Elite (LG) a low rating -- 48 out of 100 -- the same phone got an average rating of 4 out of 5 from users. 5 Things Mondelez International Inc.'s Management Wants You to Know

Sometimes the best offense during tough economic times is a strong defense. That is exactly the strategy Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) is undertaking and it's starting to pay off in spades. The company reported its fiscal third quarter results on Nov. 7 with an adjusted earnings per share explosion of 32.5% despite only a modest 2.7% bump in sales. Mondelez isn't done growing earnings, and here are five reasons I've taken from the company's most recent conference call.

Cost cuts are here to stay
Sometimes when a company trims fat off its expenses it does so at a risk. For example, cutting back on advertising may save some money in the near term but often sacrifices sales and profits in the long term. This hasn't been the case at Mondelez, where management says cost cutting has been due to investments and efficiency in its supply chain.

"This is the third consecutive quarter that we've expanded margins by at least 100 basis points and posted double digit EPS growth," stated CEO Irene Rosenfeld during the call. "We delivered this by successfully executing our productivity and supply chain initiatives and through early wins from our zero based budgeting program."

An example of this is the company's decision to invest in factories and distribution points closer to its customers to save on shipping costs. The end result is a cost savings per unit without any negative effect on revenue.

Costs down; prices up
While Mondelez is busy shedding its input expense, the company has been raising the prices for its products. Commodity costs particularly for cocoa and coffee have been climbing so Mondelez decided to pass those particular costs and then some onto its customers. Initially, being first among its competitors to do so caused some backlash.

That backlash is now starting to ease. Rosenfeld explained:

As we discussed in our last earnings call, in the short term, this will temper revenue growth until gaps narrow and customers and consumers adapt to the higher prices. Fortunately, toward the end of the quarter, conditions started to improve. Most of the customer disputes have now been resolved and price gaps have begun to narrow, especially in emerging markets.

Not just old-fashioned Oreos
Cost cutting and price increases aren't the only things on the minds of management. At the same time, they are innovating and getting base hits with new products. For example, in Russia the Marvellous Creation platform captured 1% of the chocolate bar market in the first month. In India, new pack sizes and formats caused a double-digit growth in sales of the Cadbury Dairy Milk line. In China, Oreo thins and Oreo mints are proving to be a big score.

Hot Cheapest Companies To Buy Right Now

"Our innovation programs [have been a] key driver of our ability to outgrow the markets," noted Rosenfeld during the Q&A session of the call.  She later added, "Our focus is going to be continuing to innovate."

What if cocoa and coffee keep escalating?
In case you're worried what will happen if commodity prices keep soaring -- don't sweat it. CFO Dave Brearton reassured: "I think it's fair to say that for this year we are 100% locked in, there is really not much exposure."

Here he was referring to hedging commodity prices or essentially betting against itself by betting that commodity prices will go up. Doing so locks in essentially fixed costs for its commodity inputs and makes planning and profits more predictable.

Value coming to a shareholder near you
Above all, Rosenfeld and the management team want you to know that they have your back. "Near term, leveraging this approach through 2015, we'll deliver value to our shareholders regardless of the macro environment," Rosenfeld said. "And over the long term, this will enable us to deliver sustainable top tier performance on both the top and bottom lines."

Brearton added:

We have also returned over $1.9 billion for our shareholders [in the first nine months of the year] including repurchasing $1.2 billion of stock or about 34 million shares. Based on this, we now expect our total share repurchases for 2014 to be between $1.2 billion and $2 billion. Additionally, we paid out little over $700 million in dividends.

All of this together suggests the dividend is reasonably secure. Mondelez may not pay much in the way of dividend now -- $0.60 per share annually, yielding 1.6% at recent prices -- but with earnings growing so nicely and predictably and the common theme throughout the call being "Mondelez is in control of its own destiny," don't be surprised if the per-share dividend goes up substantially from here.

Best Construction Stocks To Watch Right Now

The concept of diversity, when talking about a company activities, is a sword with two edges. When performance hits the fan, diversity can turn into an advantage as only one segment can be affected. However, diversification can curtail winnings during a moment of bonanza. In other words, a company with five segments will see a relative smaller impact in overall performance than a company with activities in a single segment, when that segment experiences an abnormal growth. Hence, with a recovering construction market in the US and declining prices for mined commodities, a comparison between Caterpillar (CAT) and Terex (TER) is all the more relevant.

Fronting the Headwinds

Caterpillar has been hit hard by declining commodity prices, as mining companies decided to delay or halt the purchase of new equipment. Also, miners delayed scheduled services and replaced original equipment parts for lower-cost options, i.e. generic. The compounded effect on overall performance manifested on a 10% year-over-year decline in revenues. A reality confronted through a block of cost reduction policies.

Top 5 Value Companies To Invest In 2014

“I don’t know why this strategy isn’t written about more in the press,” Marty Sass innocently remarked. “Maybe it sounds too complicated."

The strategy to which Sass referred is “covered call option writing against attractive equities with growing dividends combined with the purchase of index put options for downside protection.”

Not complicated at all.

While it might sound facetious, when the CEO and chairman of independent investment management firm MD Sass with $8 billion under management, explained the strategy, it really is easily understood.

“It has three ingredients,” Sass told ThinkAdvisor on Thursday. “The first is buying undervalued, high quality stocks with better yields than the S&P 500 delivers. The second is selling covered calls with attractive premiums out of the money. The last is buying index puts out of the money for additional downside protection.”

It currently results in cash flow from dividends that average 2.5%, compared with 2.1%the market is currently yielding. The option premiums result in added income of 8.8% annualized. Combine the two and the client is currently looking at 11.3% annualized. Take 1% away for the cost of the index put protection and 75 basis points for the funds fee, and it results in a net annualized return of around 9%.

Another issue that Varco has to face is the specter of increasing competition. Cameron International (NYSE: CAM  ) has arisen as a big player in the drilling and production systems space, with a particular emphasis on subsea applications like blowout preventers. With Cameron sporting a recent partnership with Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the combination will have both the expertise and the financial resources to challenge Varco in that niche. More broadly, up-and-coming Forum Energy (NYSE: FET  ) has sought to emulate Varco's broad-based services menu, offering remotely operated vehicles for deepwater inspection and construction as well as pipe and cementing materials and a range of subsea systems and equipment. Alamy HOUSTON -- Halliburton says it lost $18 million in the first quarter, pulled down by $637 million in charges related to its role in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. But it made money if unusual items are excluded, beating Wall Street expectations. The oil services company's loss amounted to 2 cents a share. That compares with net income of $627 million, or 68 cents a share, a year earlier. Halliburton Co. (HAL), which is in talks to settle claims against it related to the oil spill, said that excluding the charges it posted adjusted earnings of 67 cents a share. That beat the 57 cents that analysts expected. The Houston company, which provides a variety of services for the petroleum industry, is benefiting from a boom in U.S. oil production, which is at the highest level in more than two decades. At the same time, Halliburton's natural gas business has slowed as drillers slowed production due to falling prices for the fuel. Revenue rose slightly to $6.97 billion from $6.87 billion. Analysts expected $6.88 billion. Halliburton shares jumped $1.44, or 3.9 percent, to $38.65 in premarket trading an hour before the market opening. Halliburton is the biggest provider of oil field services in North America, including hydraulic fracturing, a technology that has helped unlock large supplies of oil and natural gas from shale rock formations in the U.S. North American revenue fell 11 percent to $3.71 billion, while operating income tumbled 43 percent to $605 million. Dave Lesar, the company's chairman, president and CEO, said a drop in Halliburton's rig count and pricing pressures in North America were more than offset by the company's growing international business. International revenue increased 21 percent from a year ago. For the full year, Halliburton still expects total international revenue growth in the "low teens," he said. Rival Schlumberger Ltd. Monday marked the end of the second quarter, and the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) failed to rise to the occasion, falling 25 points. The Dow has had a fairly flat performance so far in 2014, gaining just over 1% and making many investors question whether the bull market has the staying power it would need to provide the sixth-straight year of positive returns for the Dow. Yet even amid the lackluster gains for the Dow overall, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) have helped the Dow avoid losses for the year, with each of the Dow components gaining more than 20% in the first half. Let's take a closer look at how they did it.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Believe what you will about the long-term effect of the Fed's actions, but today, you can see from the Dow's strongest performers how well the market is taking the news. Economically sensitive Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) and Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) are both up sharply today as investors weigh the impact of further stimulus on the U.S. economy -- and it seems they've decided that faster U.S. growth should lead to further global activity as well. Yet that's far from a foregone conclusion. For Caterpillar, the recent recovery in gold and silver prices could spark renewed interest from mining companies for heavy equipment, but price levels remain far below where they were earlier this year. Alcoa, meanwhile, needs greater evidence not only of renewed construction activity but also of constraints on aluminum supply from its competitors, especially in China. A boost in activity could actually spur Chinese aluminum-producers to make more of the lightweight metal, extending glut conditions and hurting Alcoa's long-term profit outlook.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Before we hit the Dow losers, let's look at this week's best-performing component: Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . After being one of the biggest losers for two weeks, with the stock declining 0.42%, shares of Caterpillar rose 6.12% this past week. Many analysts have contributed Caterpillar's rising share price with rising gold prices this week. As concerns about inflation creep into investors' minds, gold is seen as a safe haven and a shield against losing buying power, and increasing precious-metal prices help mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers such as Caterpillar. But despite a strong one-week performance, shares of Caterpillar are still down 2.72% year to date.

With the economy starting to improve, you might think Dollar Tree's (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) fortunes will reverse.
