Unsavory results
The cola giant delivered earnings of $0.63 per share for the second quarter, which was in line with Wall Street expectations. However, revenue fell to $12.75 billion, shy of the $12.95 billion analysts expected. Global sales volume rose 1% for the quarter, despite significant weakness in North American and European soda sales. Coke shares were down more than 2% after the company issued its quarterly results Tuesday morning.
Under the weather
Even though U.S. soda volumes have fallen for roughly a decade, Coca-Cola attributed the fizzled-out consumption in both domestic and international markets to unusually cool and wet weather. Volume growth in Vietnam, which rose a robust 28%. But, disappointingly, India grew at a mere 1%. Consumption was flat in several key emerging markets, notably China and Brazil. Volumes declined 1% for the second quarter in North America, while European volumes fell a gloomy 4%.Sometimes, even being one of the globe's most diversified companies isn't enough to ward off a dreary sales quarter.

On Dec. 5, IOC issued an extensive press release trumpeting the sale to Total (NYSE: TOT) of an interest in its Papua New Guinea exploration. The IOC press release spun the sale as potentially worth billions to IOC, which has a current market cap of $2.6 billion. Indeed, that deal sounds like it could really make a huge impact on IOC, until you read the press release issued by Total. Total has indicated that its engineers will need to evaluate the prospects before any decision is made on payments. So the deal could be worth zero to IOC, and based on the company’s poor track record over the years in actually booking reserves many investors decided it was time to exit when it became clear that IOC’s spin on the deal was much different than Total’s. Shares fell 21 percent in pre-market trading on the day of the announcement, and are now down about 40 percent since the Total news hit.

So, what does this mean for AMX stock and for its largest single competitor in Latin America, SpainTelefonica (TEF)?
To start, this will, by default, massively diversify AMX revenue stream globally. Though AMX is the number-one or number-two mobile provider in nearly every Latin American country, its home market of Mexico is by far its biggest. Mexico currently accounts for about a third of sales and nearly half of profits. The new AMX will be a pan-Latin-American telecom giant based in Mexico rather than a Mexican telecom giant with operations in Central and South America.

Is Europe back?
Certainly, some of the enthusiasm about Europe has to do with the stabilization of economic prospects throughout the region. Germany, France, and Spain are still reporting sluggish GDP numbers, but some early signs suggest that the recession could already have hit bottom in many countries in Europe. Perhaps more importantly, just the fact that conditions on the continent haven't gotten markedly worse has seemed to bolster investor confidence. In particular, Spain's recovery has given investors in Telefonica (NYSE: TEF ) new hope that efforts to keep its telecom business strong not just in Europe but in Latin America as well could bear fruit.

If you are looking for a semiconductor stock that focus on an area that not so cyclical, mid cap microcontroller (MCU) stock Atmel Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML) could be a good choicemeaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with othermicrocontrollerplayers like Microchip Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MCHP), STMicroelectronics N.V. Microcontrollers are programmable andembeddedchips that are increasinglyhidden inside a all sorts of products these days e.g. if you have an appliancewith aLED or LCD screen and a keypad, it contains some kind ofmicrocontroller plus all newautomobiles contain at least oneand often several. Energy companies in the Gulf also shut down about 40% of natural gas production. Several energy firms, including BP PLC (BP) , Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC) , Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDS.A) ,Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and Chevron Corp. (CVX) , began evacuating workers earlier in the week.
- [By Robert Rapier]
Investors initially shaved about $5 billion off of Anadarko’s market cap, but about $2 billion of that was restored in subsequent trading sessions. Were it not for the environmental liability, Anadarko would be near the top of my list of E&Ps to own. But I have a tendency to avoid companies with large liabilities hanging over them. That’s why to this day I still won’t recommend BP (NYSE: BP), even though by many metrics it’s quite undervalued.
